Nearshore vs offshore
Updated:
For European companies, a nearshore team in Morocco makes collaboration easier: working hours largely overlap, travel is short and French and English are widely used. Offshore teams in India offer enormous scale and mature delivery processes, and suit large, well documented builds. Choose by how much live collaboration your product needs.
Nearshore vs offshore at a glance
Nearshore (Morocco) | Offshore (India) | |
|---|---|---|
Time zone | GMT (UTC+0) year round since September 2026 | IST, UTC+5:30 |
Overlap with Western Europe | Most of the working day | Morning hours for Europe |
Overlap with US East Coast | A few hours | Little to none |
Languages | French, Arabic, English widely used in tech | English widely used in tech |
Travel from Europe | Short flights to many EU cities | Long haul |
Scale of talent market | Smaller, growing | Very large |
Best for | Design heavy work, close collaboration | Large builds, follow the sun support |
Time zones decide more than price
Product design is conversation heavy. Workshops, reviews, quick calls when something looks wrong. When your team and your partner share most of the working day, those happen naturally. Since September 2026 Morocco stays on GMT all year, the same time as London in winter and one to two hours behind Paris, Madrid and Berlin depending on the season.
India is on UTC+5:30. For a European company that leaves a morning window for live calls, and for the US East Coast very little overlap. That can work well for build work with clear specifications, where a team can make progress overnight. It is harder for early stage product work where decisions change daily.
When offshore (India) is the better choice
You need a large team for a long engineering build.
The specification is detailed and stable.
You want round the clock progress or support.
You need niche engineering skills at scale.
When nearshore (Morocco) is the better choice
You are European and want real time collaboration.
The work is design led and changes often.
French language work matters, for example for French speaking markets.
You want to meet the team in person without a long trip.
What to check either way
Location is only part of it. Look at shipped work, how the team communicates, who will actually be on your project and how they handle changes. A great offshore team beats a weak nearshore one, and the reverse is also true.
Choose offshore if
Scale and engineering depth matter most.
Your specs are mature and well documented.
Choose nearshore if
You need daily collaboration in European hours.
Design and product decisions are still moving.
How to run a remote product team well, anywhere
Whatever the location, the same habits make remote product work succeed. A shared weekly rhythm with a demo, a single place where decisions are written down, design files the whole team can comment on, and a named person on each side who can say yes or no. Time zone overlap makes all of this easier, but it does not replace it.
For design heavy work, overlap matters most during discovery and design, when questions come up every hour. During long build phases with clear tickets, a larger time difference hurts less and can even help, because work moves forward overnight.
Language and culture
Morocco’s tech community commonly works in French and English, with Arabic as a native language, which is useful for French speaking European markets and for products aimed at North Africa and the Middle East. India’s tech industry works in English and has decades of experience delivering for global clients, with very mature processes for large projects.
A practical way to choose
Map your next six months. If most of it is shaping the product, testing with users and iterating on design, favour overlap and choose a nearshore team. If most of it is building a well specified system at scale, favour capacity and process, and an offshore team may be the better fit. Many companies use both, for different phases.

FAQ
What time zone is Morocco in?
Morocco uses GMT (UTC+0) all year. It stopped changing clocks on 20 September 2026; before that it used GMT+1 most of the year and GMT during Ramadan.
Is Morocco good for outsourcing software development?
It is a growing tech market with strong French and English use and good overlap with European hours. Judge any team by its work, not its country.
What is the difference between nearshore and offshore?
Nearshore means a nearby country with similar working hours. Offshore usually means a distant country with a large time difference.
Is offshore always cheaper?
Not always. Count the cost of slower feedback loops and rework, not only hourly rates.
